Interview with artist Hughie O'Donoghue | Galway International Arts Festival Gallery
Artist Hughie O'Donoghue in conversation with Galway International Arts Festival's Paul Fahy. Find out more about Nigh Cargo, Hughie O'Donoghue's latest GIAF exhibition: https://www.giaf.ie/festival/event/night-cargo-hughie-odonoghue Considered one of the leading painters of his generation, Hughie O'Donoghue's paintings frequently combine rich, expressionist colours and textures, verging on the abstract, when addressing a particular event or history. Night Cargo, presented at the Galway International Arts Festival Gallery as part of GIAF's September 2020 Autumn Edition, brings together a group of new and related paintings. Hughie O’Donoghue has a long association with Galway International Arts Festival. His first exhibition with the Festival in 2006 was followed by major shows in 2011 and most recently in 2016, when GIAF commissioned the artist to create a major exhibition of new work, marking Ireland’s centenary celebrations: One Hundred Years and Four Quarters. Hughie O'Donoghue RA
The artist discusses his exhibition 'Artists' Laboratory 05: Hughie O'Donoghue RA - Painting/Memory' at the Royal Academy of Arts, 29 August—14 October 2012. O’Donoghue's paintings are characterised by their exploration into the past and preoccupation with history, artefacts and mythology. The five works within this exhibition reflect the personal experiences of O’Donoghue’s father, Daniel O’Donoghue, during the Second World War and they came about as a consequence of sorting out his father’s personal effects after his death.
